How long does it take to dry out water damage

Carpet can feel dry within a day. The drywall behind it might still be soaked a week later. Drying time depends entirely on what got wet, not on how bad the flood looked at the start.
Carpet and pad
Carpet dries fastest of the group, once air movers and a dehumidifier get running against it. Moving air across the fibers pulls surface moisture out quickly, the same way a wet driveway dries faster in a breeze than sitting still. The pad underneath tells a different story. It holds water the way a sponge does, trapped between the carpet on top and the subfloor below, with neither side offering much of a path for that moisture to escape. It can stay wet for days after the carpet itself feels completely fine to the touch. Gulf-coast humidity makes the pad’s job harder still. The air doing the pulling is often already carrying plenty of moisture of its own, especially outside the cooler months. That’s part of why padding gets pulled and replaced more often than it gets dried in place.
Drywall
Drywall dries slower than carpet, because both layers that make it up, the paper facing and the gypsum core underneath, hold onto moisture, and the wall cavity behind the surface traps humid air with nowhere obvious to go. Looking at a wall and touching it tells you very little. A moisture meter pressed against the surface is what actually confirms whether it’s dry, not a hand or a guess. Drywall that’s still reading wet past 48 hours usually isn’t worth trying to save in place. The paper backing starts breaking down, and the wall stops being a good candidate for drying equipment alone. Wood flooring
Solid wood flooring takes longer than almost anything else in a typical Friendswood home. Wood is a natural material. Carpet can be back on the floor while the wood trim in the same room is still weeks from finished. Guessing which is which by feel gets it wrong more often than not. Common questions
Are fans enough on their own, without a dehumidifier?
Not usually, once there's real standing water or soaked materials involved. Fans move air, which helps evaporation, but that moisture has to go somewhere. Without a dehumidifier pulling it out of the air, it mostly settles back into whatever's nearby, including the material you're trying to dry.
How long does a dehumidifier typically need to run?
It depends on the room size, how much got wet, and the humidity outside. There's no fixed answer, but it's usually measured in days of continuous running, not hours. A moisture meter reading, not a calendar guess, is what tells a company when to pull the equipment.
Why would a moisture meter disagree with how a wall feels?
Touch only tells you about the very surface. A moisture meter reads deeper, into the material itself, which is where the real problem usually still is. A wall can feel bone dry and still be holding water an inch behind the paint.
